Bridges and Implants

BRIDGES AND IMPLANTS

Bridges

A bridge is a way of permanently replacing a missing tooth. The dentist will take an impression so that the bridge perfectly fits and replaces your missing tooth. He will then fit the bridge in the second visit. Bridges are secured in the mouth by bonding to the adjacent teeth. The teeth either side are prepared (as if they are having crowns fitted). The bridge will therefore comprise the new tooth and the new tooth – as part of a three unit bridge comprising two supporting crowns – is then bonded to the adjacent prepared teeth.

Dental Implants

A dental implant is a further, even more effective way to permanently replace a missing tooth. The dental implant is made to appear as natural as your existing teeth and is even stronger as it is actually implanted into your gum. As the tooth is implanted into your gum, you won’t have to worry that it will come loose. As with a crown, the dentist will match the implant to your natural teeth, both in shape and colour. The dental implant process normally takes a few visits, as your gum must be prepared for the implant. Once the implant is placed in the gum, a customised porcelain prosthetic tooth is attached to the implant.
